(EAST LANSING)—The number of Michigan student-athletes participating in high school sports has increased for the third consecutive year.
According to a report released today by the Michigan High School Athletic Association, 270,664 participants competed in the 28 MHSAA-sanctioned sports across 754 high schools during the 2023-2024 school year.
This participant count represents a one percent increase over the previous academic year.
Football was the most popular sport for boys, with almost 35,000 students taking the field, while volleyball was the most popular for girls, with just over 19,000 players on the court.
The MHSAA says athletics involvement increased despite a two percent decrease in enrollment in Michigan high schools last year.
WGHN’s high school sports coverage commences with football kicking off Thursday, August 29th. The Spring Lake Lakers will host the Fruitport Trojans on 92.1 FM, while the Muskegon Catholic Central Crusaders open the season at New Lothrop on wghn.com.
