(Grand Haven, MI) – Nichole Hudson has made history by becoming Grand Haven’s first female public safety chief. She was hired July 1 to succeed retired Director Jeff Hawke and the city held an open house to introduce her last night. Hudson has been with the Grand Haven Public Safety Department since 2002 when she was hired at 19 as a parking cadet.

“So I don’t look at it as being a female in law enforcement,” Hudson said. “It just means I’m being the best candidate at that time. But looking back at it, it’s kind of a neat experience to be the first female director of Grand Haven Public Safety, so maybe moving forward we can see more women break those ceilings. They just have to work hard and dedicate themselves to the cause of being able to push through a lot of those boundaries that they have in law enforcement.”

She says she wants the department to become more involved in the community and says they fell away from those efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
