Cooling Centers in Ottawa County

By Mary Ellen Murphy Jun 18, 2024 | 5:56 AM

West Olive, MI (WGHN) – The National Weather Service has issued a week-long heat advisory for Ottawa County and surrounding counties.  This will include daytime temperatures into the low 90’s (with heat indices in the mid to high 90’s) and warm nighttime temperatures in the low 70’s.  The combination of heat during the day, with little relief at night, can be harmful to persons who are vulnerable to heat illnesses and don’t have a way to cool their environment.

Some ways to beat the heat include: spending time in a cooled interior environment, finding shade when outdoors, minimizing physical activity outdoors, and drinking plenty of cool water (not alcohol which can lead to dehydration).  Please also consider your pets.  Make sure pets have a cool and shady spot to use, and plenty of water.  Of course, do not leave persons or pets in vehicles, where temperatures can quickly become dangerous.

If you do not have a way to cool down, the following locations in Ottawa County are normally open and can provide a spot to beat the heat:
