Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – The former general manager of the Grand Haven Board of Light & Power Dave Walters has filed a lawsuit against the local power utility and two elected officials.
The Grand Haven Tribune says Walters Walters filed the lawsuit on April 22nd in the 20th Circuit Court of Ottawa County. Defendants are listed as the Board of Light & Power; BLP Board of Directors member Andrea Hendrick; and Grand Haven City Councilmember Ryan Cummins.
Walters who was fired by the BLP on Jan. 25 states claims he was “illegally terminated by the BLP for raising whistleblower claims against the BLP, in violation of Michigan law.” Walters’ attorneys, Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge are asking for a jury trial.
Back in October of 2023, Walters had offered his resignation , based on a proposed separation agreement, which had been negotiated between Walters, BLP Chair Mike Westbrook, then-BLP Vice Chair Gerry Witherell, and BLP Human Resources Supervisor Danielle Martin.
Walters refused the offer and then revoked his written notice of retirement.
The Tribune reports that both Hendrick and Cummins declined to comment and are in the process of communicating with attorneys in regards to the lawsuit.
