Sheriff Announces New Ottawa County Undersheriff

West Olive, MI (WGHN) – Sergeant Eric DeBoer of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s has been selected as the  new Undersheriff of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. Sgt, DeBoer will begin his new position on March 3rd, 2024.

Sgt. DeBoer began his career in 1999 as a Reserve Deputy, in 2001 Eric became a Road Patrol Deputy serving citizens in a community policing role. Eric was promoted to Detective in 2014 and in 2022 was promoted to Road Patrol Sergeant where he currently serves the agency.

Eric has been instrumental in many committees, project planning and implementation through the years at the Sheriff’s Office. Eric has demonstrated a strong understanding of the agency and its related responsibilities. Throughout Eric’s career with the agency, Eric has always displayed the talents, abilities, and skill level for this important leadership role.

Eric is a resident of Ottawa County, holds an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Kalamazoo Community College, a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Calvin University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Grand Valley State University. Eric is a graduate of the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Police Academy. Eric has also completed numerous certifications and specialized training in the law enforcement field.

The Sheriff’s Office Executive team and Sheriff Kempker are looking forward to working with Eric during the transitional period as he prepares to take over the Undersheriff responsibilities . DeBoer will take over for Undersheriff Valerie Weiss, who will retire on February 28th.
