Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Grand Haven City Council has approved the authorization of the draft Master Plan to be distributed for a 63-day public comment as required by the Michigan Planning Enabling Act. James Kilborne Associate Planner of Progressive AE says there was a community survey with 5 percent of residents taking part and there was also a community open house and a leadership committee too.

“You can see that people value beautiful nature, Lake Michigan, the waterfront, access to nature through trails, sidewalks and things of that nature. As well as focusing development in appropriate areas. Comment 132 is interesting cuz it kind of illustrates an east/west divide in the city. The key aspect of this planning process was looking at Beacon BLVD. It’s really the defining east/west feature in the city and how can we better increase connectivity across Beacon BLVD. That is a major factor we want to account for.”

Three things stood out:

Protect and Emphasize Natural Features
Focus Development in Appropriate Areas
Increase connectivity between neighborhoods
Councilman Mike Fritz  says now is the time to contact council and let them know if they hit the nail on the head in developing this master plan.
The proposed master plan will be available for review on the city’s website for 63 days. A public hearing on it is expected to be held at the May 9 planning commission meeting, at which the commission could decide whether to adopt the master plan.
If planners approve it, the master plan could be up for city commission adoption on May 15.
