(Grand Haven, MI) – A Grand Haven couple is accused of leaving a baby alone in an icy car. Philip James Nass III and Crystal Maria Kanouse have been arrested in connection with last month’s incident. Authorities say the parents had pulled off the side of the road and passed out in the front seat of the vehicle with the four-month old baby in the back, with the car not running.

A passerby called 911, and police say they baby’s feet were blue and his skin was cold to the touch. Director of Public Safety Jeff Hawke said, “We are grateful for the person that stopped and called 911. The baby very likely would have died had he remained in the car.”

The charges are as follows:

Philip James Nass III

32 years of age from Grand Haven

Charged:

1 count of child abuse second degree/felony/penalty 10 years

1 count of habitual offender 4th offense/felony/penalty life

Crystal Maria Kanouse

30 years of age from Grand Haven

Charged:

1 count of child abuse second degree/felony/penalty 10 years

It is suspected that drug use contributed to this incident.
