Muskwegon, MI (WGHN) – A man is facing terrorism-related charges after Michigan State Police uncovered alleged plans for mass violence during an investigation. The Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office has authorized charges of threat of terrorism and possession of an explosive device with unlawful intent against Stewart Lee Simon.
According to prosecutors, the investigation began after a third party alerted Simon’s family to statements he allegedly made threatening mass violence. The information was passed along to Michigan State Police. Investigators later searched Simon’s home and reported finding improvised pipe bombs, Molotov cocktails, toxic chemicals, multiple firearms and writings outlining his alleged plans.
Simon was arrested at his workplace in Oceana County as officers carried out the search warrants. Prosecutors say he resisted arrest while armed with a firearm. No officers were injured.
Simon remains in the Oceana County jail on a $100,000 bond. He also faces separate charges in that county, including carrying a concealed weapon, resisting and obstructing, and felony firearm.
The investigation is ongoing. Prosecutors credited the person who reported the alleged threats with helping authorities intervene before anyone was hurt.
