Ottawa County, MI (WGHN) – A public hearing was held Tuesday evening on Consumers Energy’s proposal to build a coal ash processing plant at the J.H. Campbell site in Port Sheldon Township. The facility would be located east of the existing power plant and convert coal ash into a material that can be used as a substitute for cement in concrete production.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy says its initial review indicates the project would meet applicable state and federal air quality requirements.

Consumers Energy announced the plans in early 2025 as part of its effort to address decades of coal ash deposits at the site and reuse the material.

The company must receive an air quality permit before construction can begin.

The public comment period remains open through Thursday, October 29. Comments can be submitted through the Michigan EGLE website.
