Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Redevelopment of the former Grand Haven Board of Light and Power diesel plant is moving forward. City Council unanimously approved a revised development agreement Monday for the property at 518 South Harbor Drive.

The project calls for demolishing the existing building and constructing about 12-thousand square feet of commercial space, parking and 15 to 20 residential condominiums across multiple buildings.

Capstone Companies co-owner John Groothuis:

Developers also must make a good-faith effort to reach an agreement with the Grand Haven Children’s Museum to occupy part of the commercial space. The museum is searching for a new home after lease discussions with Central Park Place fell through.

The agreement requires construction to begin within 14 months and be substantially completed within 18 months after groundbreaking. The developer could face 75-thousand dollars in damages if the completion deadline is missed.

Councilwoman Sarah Kallio:

Developers hope to break ground before the end of 2027 and begin the Planning Commission review

process within the next month.
