WHO Warns Of Healthcare Worker Shortage In New Report

By Mary Ellen Murphy Oct 20, 2026 | 10:17 AM

(Geneva) – The World Health Organization is forecasting a major healthcare worker shortage due to a wave up expected retirements in the coming years. The organization released a report this week on workforce levels, trends and challenges. The report predicts one in four doctors will retire over the next 10 years and dozens of countries will not have enough health workers in the next four years.

The report shows workforce shortages and unequal distribution continue to limit healthcare access for many people.
