GRAND HAVEN, MI (WGHN) – Grand Haven High School will be closed Friday, October 9, as crews continue cleanup and restoration following Thursday morning’s intentionally set bathroom fire.
Grand Haven Area Public Schools announced the decision after consulting with Grand Haven Township Fire officials and fire inspectors.
The fire damaged only a second-floor bathroom, but smoke and dirt spread to other parts of the building, so more cleaning is required.
The area from the main entrance and rotunda south through the school wing will stay closed, and only authorized staff can enter. Areas north of the cafeteria are open to use.
Thursday night’s scheduled athletic events and this weekend’s Homecoming dance will proceed as planned, with affected portions of the building closed.
Cleaning and repair teams will work all weekend, and the district plans to resume classes on Monday, October 12.
The fire caused the school to evacuate and finish early on Thursday.
Two students were treated for smoke inhalation, and a 16-year-old suspect has been identified.
