GRAND HAVEN, MI – Authorities say the fire that caused Grand Haven High School to be evacuated Thursday morning was set on purpose, and a 16-year-old suspect has been identified.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, the school’s resource officer has been working with Grand Haven High School leaders to investigate the incident, which occurred just after 9 a.m.

Investigators found and talked to a 16-year-old suspect, who was then sent home to their parents. The suspect’s name is not being shared because they are a minor.

The Sheriff’s Office said it will send charges to the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office to review as part of a case involving a minor.

Crews also confirmed that the second-floor bathroom where the fire started was badly damaged, including the walls and ceiling.

Officials moved students and staff out as a safety measure while Grand Haven Township Fire Rescue and other emergency workers arrived.

Two students were treated at the scene for breathing in smoke. No more details about their condition have been shared.
