Ottawa County, MI (WGHN) – The Ottawa County Board of Commissioners has overwhelmingly approved an agreement to transition the county’s Community Mental Health Department into an independent Community Mental Health Authority.
County officials say the agreement is designed to ensure a stable transition while protecting continuity of services for residents, CMH employees and community partners.
The board also approved a Promissory Note that would give the newly formed authority access to funds to maintain cash flow if payments from the State of Michigan or the regional entity are delayed.
County officials describe the financing arrangement as the first of its kind in Michigan’s public mental health system. They say it will help the new authority continue meeting its financial obligations to employees, providers and community partners during potential payment delays.
The Ottawa County CMH Board of Directors has also approved the Transition Agreement and Promissory Note.
With both boards approving the measures, the new authority can move forward with the next steps in the transition. County officials say additional details are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
The transition marks a significant organizational change for mental health services in Ottawa County, while officials say the goal is to maintain services and minimize disruptions throughout the process.
