(Lansing, MI) – State Senate Majority Leader and Democratic lieutenant governor nominee Winnie Brinks says some Republicans want a constitutional convention to end abortion rights in Michigan. Brinks says Republican lieutenant governor nominee, Representative Jay DeBoyer, mentioned in a recording obtained by The Detroit News that it “might be our only way” to ban abortions in the state after 12-weeks. Republican nominee for governor John James says he would vote against the convention.
Brinks says Democrats fought very hard to enshrine reproductive rights in the constitution and they are very concerned that the GOP has “their eye on eroding or eliminating those essential rights.”
