(Undated) – July was the hottest month on record for the contiguous United States. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, average temperatures across 48 states and Washington, D.C., reached 76-point-nine degrees, narrowly surpassing previous records set in July 1936 and 2012. Overnight temperatures were especially notable, averaging 64-point-two degrees, the warmest monthly nighttime average ever recorded and nearly four degrees above the long-term average.
NOAA says much of the West, Southwest, Rockies, northern Plains and upper Midwest experienced unusually high temperatures, while nearly half of the contiguous U.S. was experiencing drought as of early August.
