Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) -More than one-third of registered voters cast ballots in Tuesday’s August primary election across the Lakeshore. Ottawa County reported a voter turnout of 36.2%, including ballots cast in person, by absentee and during the state’s nine-day early voting period
Statewide Governor Race:
John James will the Republican primary for Michigan governor. The congressman defeated Perry Johnson. The President Trump endorsed James will face Demcorat Jocelyn Benson in the midterm election

Statewide Senate Race:
NBC News is reporting that Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s Democrat U.S. Senate primary. The progressive El-Sayed defeated establishment-backed Congresswoman Haley Stevens in a closely-watched contest. The race divided the party, with fears within the DNC that an El-Sayed victory would pull the party further left, and hurt their midterm hopes to regain control of the House and Senate. In the midterms, El-Sayed will face Republican Mike Rogers, who has the backing of President Trump.
In the U.S. House Race:
Republican Terri DeBoer will face Democratic U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten in the Nov. 3 general election after winning Tuesday’s primary in Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District.
The former West Michigan television meteorologist and small business owner, DeBoer campaigned on lowering inflation, cutting federal spending, strengthening border security, backing law enforcement and expanding domestic energy production.
Republican U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga and Democrat Sean McCann won their party nominations Tuesday and will face each other in the November general election for Michigan’s 4th Congressional District seat.
Huizenga defeated Republican challenger Philip Tanis, while McCann secured the Democratic nomination over Diop Harris II.
In local races:
Republican state Rep. Greg VanWoerkom and Republican Joe Moss won their primary races Tuesday, advancing to the November general election.
In the 88th House District, incumbent VanWoerkom of Norton Shores defeated challenger Ethan Frasier by a wide margin. Unofficial results showed VanWoerkom receiving nearly 90% of the vote in both Ottawa and Muskegon counties.
The 88th District includes parts of Ottawa and Muskegon counties, including Grand Haven, Ferrysburg, Grand Haven Township, Spring Lake Township, Robinson Township, Crockery Township, Olive Township and Port Sheldon Township.
Moss secured the Republican nomination in the 89th House District and will move on to the November ballot.
John Wetzel secured the Republican nomination for Michigan’s 31st Senate District on Tuesday, while Chris Kleinjans won the Democratic primary, setting up a November showdown to succeed term-limited Sen. Roger Victory.
Wetzel defeated fellow Republicans Kevin J. Maas and Michael Markey Jr., receiving 40.39% of the vote, according to unofficial Ottawa County election results.
Millage Proposals:
Voters also approved countywide millage proposals for Ottawa County Community Mental Health,
Executive Director of Mosiac Counseling Sarah Lewakowski:
Ottawa County Parks and Allegan County Senior Citizen Services. Local proposals passed in Holland and Park townships for public safety.
Results remain unofficial until county canvassers certify the election after the deadline for overseas ballots next week.
