(Undated) – New research has linked heavy television viewing to brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease. The study, published in Alzheimer’s Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, tracked over seventeen-hundred participants’ TV viewing habits in midlife for nearly 24 years. The findings, which examined participants brains using MRI scans, showed that men who frequently watched TV had more white matter damage associated with cognitive decline and dementia. It also showed smaller frontal and occipital lobes, areas that are vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers emphasized that the biggest concern is extended periods of passive screen time replacing social interaction or other mentally stimulating activities that support long-term brain health.
