(Ottawa) – Canada is canceling its joint celebration with the U.S. over a new bridge linking Ontario and Michigan. The Gordie Howe International Bridge is named after a beloved Canadian hockey legend, and is scheduled to open to traffic on July 27th between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. A ribbon-cutting ceremony with U.S. officials was planned for July 24th, but a Canadian official said Tuesday that it would be “inappropriate to proceed with a celebratory event ?between the two countries” in light of the recent trade action threatened by President Trump. On Monday, Trump announced 50-percent tariffs on a wide range of Canadian imports.
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield says she is cautiously hopeful that the Gordie Howe International Bridge will open Monday. Sheffield, however, is still concerned the U.S. federal government might delay the opening of the second bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario again.
It was supposed to open in June. Canadian officials this week canceled a joint ceremony with Americans that was set for Friday and will hold their own tomorrow. Canada also says they “remain committed to opening the bridge on July 27th.”
