Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – The Salvation Army will hold a ground breaking ceremony today at 11:30 a.m. for their New Beginnings Emergency Shelter for families with children.
The existing structures, two duplexes and a single-family home located behind the Salvation Army campus at 310 Despelder St., are more than 120 years old and had become unusable due to age, structural issues and accessibility concerns.
The buildings will be replaced with six new housing units designed to provide temporary shelter for families and individuals experiencing homelessness. Each unit will have the capacity to house up to 10 people while they work with case managers to secure permanent housing.
Major James Mungai:
The $2.3 million project is funded through grants from the Michigan State Housing and Development Authority and the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation. Construction costs have increased since the project was first planned, leaving the Salvation Army with a funding gap of nearly $300,000.
The New Beginnings project is intended to expand temporary housing options in the Grand Haven area and provide additional support for families in need.
