(Washington, DC) – The CDC is working to determine the source of a parasitic illness linked to “explosive” diarrhea in multiple states. In Michigan, Dr. John Brooks of McLaren Health says symptoms can be very uncomfortable.
At least 145 cases of cyclosporiasis , a type of food poisoning caused by a parasite and which may be linked to fresh produce, have been reported across 17 states. The CDC says the ages of those sickened range from five to 86 years old. About 20 people have been hospitalized after suffering severe symptoms. The condition is not usually life-threatening, but people can experience cramps, nausea, fatigue and vomiting, with the most commonly reported symptom being “watery diarrhea with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements.”
Brooks says medical experts have an idea of what the source might be.
Dr. Brian Fedoronko of Priority Health in Michigan says it’s always a good idea to wash fresh fruits and vegetables and inspect them before eating them.
