Lansing, MI (WGHN) – State Rep. Greg VanWoerkom’s plan to help working families afford childcare while strengthening Michigan’s workforce has passed the Senate, taking the next step to permanently establish the state’s successful MI Tri-Share Child Care Program.
“Michigan parents should not be forced to make a decision between their children or their job,” said VanWoerkom, R-Norton Shores. “This plan allows working parents to advance their careers and support their families.”
The MI Tri-Share Child Care Program, which VanWoerkom led the way in establishing as a pilot program in 2020, helps eligible working families afford licensed childcare through a three-way cost-sharing partnership between the state, participating employers, and employees. Under the program, childcare expenses are divided equally among all three partners, significantly reducing costs for parents while helping employers recruit and retain workers.
“By making it a permanent part of state law, we’re providing stability for the people who rely on this program and ensure it can continue helping Michigan families for years to come,” VanWoerkom said.
This bill also strengthens Michigan’s workforce by helping parents remain employed while easing one of the largest financial burdens facing working families.
“Employers across Michigan are looking for ways to support their workers and fill open positions,” VanWoerkom said. “This is a practical solution that benefits everyone involved; parents receive help with childcare costs, employers gain a more stable workforce, and children receive proper care in licensed settings.”
