(Undated) – Dementia costs in the U.S. are expected to surpass 800 billion dollars this year. According to a new study published by the Alzheimer’s Association, the costs are mostly falling on unpaid caregivers, not the government as individuals and families bear over three times the cost versus health systems. Over five million Americans are living with dementia and another five million people are caring for them without pay.
The study also highlighted that quality-of-life losses are the largest driver of dementia’s total burden.
