(Grand Rapids, MI) – The U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities will be increasing patrols of West Michigan waterways this Fourth of July weekend. “Operation Dry Water” aims to promote sober boating, as alcohol is one of the largest contributors to fatal boating accidents. The U.S. Coast Guard says it has teamed up with nearly every county in West Michigan for the operation. Officials add that the goal is not to ticket or arrest as many people as possible, but rather to educate boaters so they can stay safe.
The increased water patrols will run Friday through Sunday.
