Grand Rapids, MI (WGHN) – Two people were killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 196 in Grand Rapids early Friday morning, according to Michigan State Police.
Authorities said a 36-year-old Grand Rapids man was traveling the wrong direction in the westbound lanes near Lane Avenue when his vehicle collided head-on with a car driven by a 39-year-old woman from Jenison.
Both drivers died at the scene. No other passengers were involved in the crash.
The collision occurred around 12:50 a.m., prompting the closure of westbound I-196 for several hours as emergency crews responded and investigators examined the scene.
The roadway reopened shortly before 5 a.m. Friday. The crash remains under investigation.
