Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) -Plans for Grand Haven’s former diesel plant are changing, with developers now proposing to demolish the historic structure and rebuild it as a replica.

The updated proposal from CL Real Estate Development, along with Lakewood Construction and partner Capstone, was presented to Grand Haven City Council Monday night during a work session.

The development team purchased the waterfront property in 2022 with plans to renovate the building into an event center, restaurant and residential units. Developers now say structural issues, rising costs and market concerns from potential tenants caused the original project to stall.

Councilwoman Erin Lyon:

The revised plan calls for three new buildings designed to resemble the existing diesel plant. The proposal includes 19 condominiums and restaurant space.

Some residents have expressed disappointment over the possible loss of the historic building, saying the structure is an important part of Grand Haven’s character and waterfront identity.

This resident felt the survey that was in the water bill wasn’t transparent enough:

Others hope any future development maintains the city’s historic appearance and reflects its ties to the Coast Guard and Lake Michigan.
