Report: MI Minimum Wage Too Low Compared To Housing Costs

By Mary Ellen Murphy May 18, 2026 | 6:34 AM

(Grand Rapids, MI) – A new report suggests that the minimum wage in Michigan is way lower than is needed to afford housing. The National Low Income Housing Coalition’s most recent report shows that the average cost of a two-bedroom rental in Michigan is over twelve-hundred-dollars per month, meaning residents need to earn a minimum wage of 24-dollars and 46-cents to afford housing. That’s nearly double the current minimum wage of 13-dollars and 73-cents per hour.

The report underscores the challenges faced by low-income renters in Michigan and the urgent need for higher wages to address the affordability crisis.
