Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Two kayakers were rescued from the icy waters of Lake Michigan Tuesday evening in Grand Haven.
According to Grand Haven Public Safety, crews were dispatched around 5:09 p.m. to the 19000 block of North Shore Drive for a water rescue. Officials say the two were kayaking when a large ice shelf knocked them from their boats, sending both into the water. One kayak went missing, and the other was too damaged to use, leaving them stranded.
Both kayakers were wearing wetsuits and were able to climb onto a nearby ice shelf, where they waited for help. Rescue crews safely pulled them from the ice and water.
One person was taken to Trinity Health Muskegon and the other to Trinity Health Grand Haven for treatment of injuries.
Assisting at the scene were the Ferrysburg Fire Department, Life EMS, and the United States Coast Guard.
