Governor Whitmer Open To Talking About Property Tax Cuts

By Mary Ellen Murphy Feb 27, 2026 | 7:56 AM

(Lansing, MI) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer says she is open to having a conversation with state House Speaker Matt Hall on a property tax cut proposal. Hall, a Richland Republican, wants to end the state’s six-mill property tax, the pop-up tax on new home buyers, and the real estate transfer tax and shifting that to a service tax on luxury taxes. Whitmer says “if an idea is genuine, we should put it on the table” and see what’s possible.

The Anderson Economic Group’s Patrick Anderson says Hall’s idea may have a rocky ride ahead if he wants to get it done.
