GRAND HAVEN, MICH. – Imagine sitting across from someone you love who you’ve lost — hearing his voice, seeing his smile, watching him remember your life together. Now imagine he isn’t real.
Central Park Players will present the sci-fi drama Marjorie Prime, a haunting and timely story about memory, family, and the growing presence of AI in our lives. The show will run for five performances at Central Park Place in Grand Haven on February 27, 28, March 6 & 7 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on March 8 at 2:30 p.m.
Hear the interview below with Director Jennifer Reeths and Marjorie portrayed by Diane Reeths below:
Written by Jordan Harrison, Marjorie Prime is set in the near future and centers on 86-year-old Marjorie, portrayed by Diane Reeths, as she faces increasing memory loss. Hoping to help her hold onto the past, her daughter and son-in-law introduce her to Walter — attentive, familiar, and remarkably lifelike. He listens as she recounts fragments of her life, gently filling in missing details.
But Walter is not her husband. He is an AI “Prime,” programmed to resemble him and built from the memories her family chooses to share. As conversations unfold, memories begin to shift and perspectives collide. The play asks deeply human questions about who controls the stories we tell, what technology can preserve, and what it can never truly replace.
A finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the play by Jordan Harrison went on to a celebrated Broadway run and was later adapted into a feature film starring Lois Smith and Jon Hamm. With AI now moving rapidly from science fiction into daily life, Marjorie Prime feels less like fantasy and more like a conversation we are already having.
Directed by Jennifer Reeths, with Assistant Director Meg Sebastian and Producer Amy Lalick-Prinzi, the production also features Thomas Goedert, Katie Ciesielski, and Matthew Abel.
Tickets are $18 and may be purchased at https://cpp.ludus.com/ or at the Central Park Place box office one hour before each showtime. Community members can see the show for free by volunteering as an usher or box office assistant. To sign up, email volunteer@centralparkplayers.org.
