Romulus City Council Approves Opposition To ICE Detention Facility

By Mary Ellen Murphy Feb 24, 2026 | 7:55 AM
(Romulus, MI)  –  The Romulus City Council has voted unanimously to oppose the purchase of a warehouse by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for a detention facility.
The vote followed a rally held outside City Hall that started peaceful, but quickly escalated into a confrontation.  Counter protestors showed up with a sign reading “America Stands with ICE” and police needed to separate the groups and get people calmed down.  State Senators Mallory McMorrow and Darrin Camilleri said ICE blindsided Romulus with the warehouse purchase and added the community does not want the facility.
ICE says the facility will create nearly 15-hundred jobs and have a nearly 150-million-dollar economic impact.
