Ottawa County, MI (WGHN) – Seasonal weight and speed restrictions will take effect at 6 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, across multiple West Michigan road agencies as spring thaw conditions begin to impact roadway stability.

The restrictions are intended to protect roads during freeze-thaw cycles, when rising temperatures release frost from the ground and leave roadbeds saturated and more susceptible to damage from heavy vehicle traffic. During the restriction period, legal axle loads must be reduced by 35%, and truck speeds will be limited to 35 mph on posted roads.

The following agencies will enforce seasonal weight and speed restrictions:

  • Allegan County Road Commission

  • Barry County Road Commission

  • Berrien County Road Department

  • Cass County Road Commission

  • Calhoun County Road Department (beginning Feb. 17)

  • Ionia County Road Department

  • Road Commission of Kalamazoo County

  • Kent County Road Commission

  • Mason County Road Commission

  • Road Commission for Montcalm County

  • Muskegon County Road Commission

  • Newaygo County Road Commission

  • Oceana County Road Commission

  • Ottawa County Road Commission

  • St. Joseph County Road Commission

  • Van Buren County Road Commission

  • City of Walker

  • City of Kentwood

Statewide seasonal weight restriction updates are available through the County Road Association of Michigan dashboard.
