GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — The City of Grand Haven has secured a $1,092,000 federal grant for the Renew Harbor Island project through the Federal Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Fiscal Year 2026 Appropriations Bill.
The funding was included in the House appropriations bill and signed into law by Congress and the president in January 2026. City officials said the financial support represents significant momentum for the long-planned remediation of Harbor Island and will help keep the project cost-effective.
U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten advocated for the funding in Congress and said she will continue working to ensure Harbor Island is restored for full public use and enjoyment.
Renew Harbor Island project staff are currently developing remediation remedies. Public input on remediation alternatives is anticipated later this year.
City officials said they will continue working closely with Scholten as remediation efforts move forward.
