(Covert Township, MI) – Holtec International is receiving 400 million dollars from the U.S. Department of Energy to complete two small modular reactors at the Palisades nuclear power plant in Covert Township. The reactors will each generate 300 megawatts of electricity, which is enough to power thousands of homes. The SMR-300 reactors would support 300 full-time jobs. Holtec is trying to get the plant restarted, and it would become the first in the United States to restart after it had been shut down for decommissioning.

The DOE also awarded the company a one-point-52-billion-dollar loan for restarting Palisades in March, 2024.
