Olive Twp., MI (WGHN) – A 23-year-old man is in custody after deputies used a drone and K-9 teams to track him down following a Tuesday afternoon home invasion that left a 68-year-old homeowner injured and the man’s dog fatally stabbed.

Deputies were called to the 11800 block of New Holland Street around 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 18. By the time they arrived, the suspect had fled. According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jacob Mucha, the homeowner sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the scene, while the dog later died from its injuries despite emergency veterinary care.

A drone team and K-9 units located the suspect a short time later. Mucha said there is no known connection between the suspect and the homeowner. The suspect is being held at the Ottawa County Jail pending arraignment, and his name has not yet been released.

Nearby schools enacted a brief shelter-in-place during the search, which was lifted once the suspect was captured. Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The investigation continued into Tuesday evening. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office at 616-738-4000 or Silent Observer at 877-88-SILENT (745368) or mosotips.com. Personnel from the Holland Department of Public Safety and Olive Township Fire Rescue also responded.
