(Kalamazoo, MI) — Mayoral elections in Kalamazoo, Portage, Muskegon, Holland, and South Haven resulted in another term for the mayors of each city. Muskegon voters have reelected Mayor Ken Johnson. Johnson won (62.8%) to challenger Bob Garretson’s(37.2%), according to the Muskegon County Clerk’s Office.
However, North Muskegon Mayor Sabina Freeman lost the election to challenger Christopher Nance, and Whitehall Mayor Steven Salter lost to Tom Ziemer.
Detroiters have made history by selecting city council president Mary Sheffield as the city’s next mayor. Sheffield will become the first female to lead the city when she is sworn in and started her campaign two years before the election.
She will succeed Mayor Mike Duggan, who is running as an independent for Michigan governor in 2026. Sheffield outraised pastor Solomon Kinloch, pulling in two-point-eight-million-dollars compared to his 700-thousand-dollars. Duggan endorsed her after the primary election in August.
