Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Grand Haven residents voted Tuesday to support a millage request from the city’s Department of Public Safety to upgrade its Washington Avenue headquarters.
The proposal passed with 1,835 yes votes (58.44%) to 1,305 no votes (41.56%).
The approved 2-mill levy will be collected over 10 years and is expected to raise nearly $15 million.
Chief of Police Nichole Hudson says an updated facility will help recruit and retain employees:
About 65% of the funds — roughly $9.5 million — will be used for building improvements at the facility located at 525 Washington Ave. Another 25% will go toward replacing the department’s ladder truck and purchasing new turnout gear, while the remaining 10% will support operating expenses.
