Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – It’s Election Day in Ottawa County. Polls are open from seven this morning until eight tonight.

In Grand Haven, Mayor Bob Monetza is running unopposed — so he’ll stay in office for another two years. Current councilmembers Karen Lowe and Kevin McLaughlin aren’t running again.

And there’s an open seat — that’s the one left empty when Ryan Cummins became the new city manager in Saugatuck. Mike Dora, who’s served on council before, is the only candidate running for that partial term.

For the two other seats, voters will choose between Dennis Scott, Erin Lyon, and Sarah Kallio.

Voters in Grand Haven will also decide on a Public Safety millage worth almost 15 million dollars. The proposed ballot initiative would be an additional two mills (2.0 mills) for the next ten years for a period of 10 years.

Nichole Hudson is Chief of Police:

The facility, built in the 1970s, needs modernization to address issues like structural problems, inadequate locker rooms, an unusable indoor shooting range, and the need for proper decontamination areas to protect firefighters from carcinogens.

Two Board of Light and Power members are also on the ballot — Todd Crum, running for a full six-year term, and Phillip Polyak, running to finish a partial term that ends in 2027.

In Ferrysburg, it’s a mayoral race between incumbent Richard Carlson and Councilmember Jerry Sias. If Sias wins, his council seat would open up and be filled by appointment.

Councilmember Jake Stearley is not running again, but Debbie Murdoch and Bill Cate are both seeking re-election. Dave Cook is running for Stearley’s seat — and former councilmember Tim O’Donnell is back in the mix as a write-in candidate.
