Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – The City of Grand Haven has approved a new deer management plan. The plan allows for an annual cull — up to 40 percent of the deer population, or no more than 50 deer a year — based on state DNR guidance and permits.

A study earlier this year found more than a hundred deer living within about 200 acres of city forest land — an overpopulation city leaders say is harming the environment. The city has budgeted 25-thousand dollars for the plan, which includes hiring a licensed contractor to carry out the cull safely and legally.
Officials say the goal is to protect Grand Haven’s urban forests and restore balance to local wildlife.
