Cougar Sightings In Michigan At 20 So Far In 2025

By Mary Ellen Murphy Oct 21, 2025 | 6:34 AM

(Lansing, MI) — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says cougar sightings in the state in 2025 are now at 20. There were 21 sightings of the large cats in 2024 and the DNR says the increase may be due to more video cameras on trails along with the possibility more cougars have entered Michigan. The number of sightings has risen from eight in 2021.

The DNR’s large carnivore specialist Brian Roell says there are likely fewer than ten cougars in the state, but they don’t have an exact estimate.
