Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – The federal government remains shut down with today marking one full week, making it the fourth-longest shutdown in the nation’s history. Essential federal workers continue to show up but aren’t being paid, including one-point-three-million active duty troops now slated to miss their first paycheck on October 15th. The Pay Our Coast Guard Parity Act of 2025 (H.R. 1542) was reintroduced in the House in February 2025 by Representative Hillary Scholten.
Mayor Bob Monetza says the last time there was a shutdown they did fundraisers in town for local Coasties.
A similar bill, the Pay Our Coast Guard Act (S. 802), was also introduced in the Senate.
Other bills have been introduced to address the issue of military pay during government funding lapses, including the Pay Our Troops Act of 2026.
Social Security will continue to pay out benefits. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits will continue as funding allows. The Postal Service continues to operate as it is not dependent on funding from Congress. Employees who work for the immigration court system will keep working since President Trump has declared immigration a national emergency.
