Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – A proposed plan to renovate the long-vacant Grand Haven Jewelry Building met resistance at Tuesday’s city council meeting. The developer hopes to transform the downtown site—empty for five years—into seven residential units using a mix of state grants, bank loans, and cash. They are also seeking two state incentives:
A 12-year property tax exemption.
Rent reimbursement for below-market-rate units.
Together, the incentives would save or reimburse the developer about $435,000 over 15 years. Councilwoman Karen Lowe questioned rewarding inaction on the property.
Councilman Kevin McLaughlin:
The council postponed a decision until September 15.
