Short-term rentals approved in Centertown

Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – The Grand Haven Planning Commission voted Tuesday to approve a zoning change that would allow short-term rentals in the Centertown area—a move supporters say could boost tourism and bring more business to the neighborhood.

Fox 17 reports that a major project tied to the change is Steinbach Crossings, a proposed two-story building at the corner of Seventh and Columbus streets. The development would feature 12 condominiums designed to be used as short-term rentals. John Steinbach, one of the developers behind the project, has deep roots in the area—his family will mark 100 years as Centertown business owners next year.

Supporters argue the rentals will drive more spending at local businesses. According to Airbnb, short-term rentals in Michigan generated $1.3 billion in revenue in 2024, with guests spending an average of $622 at nearby shops and restaurants.

While Tuesday’s approval is a key first step, the proposal will now move to the City Council for final consideration on August 4.
