KALAMAZOO, Mich. — State Senator Sean McCann (D–Kalamazoo) announced Monday that he is running for Congress in Michigan’s 4th District, aiming to unseat Republican incumbent Rep. Bill Huizenga in the 2026 election.

Huizenga, who represents the historically Republican district, has held the seat since 2023.

With his term as senator for Michigan’s 19th District ending and term limits preventing him from seeking reelection, McCann is looking to take his legislative experience to Washington. In his announcement, he emphasized priorities such as tax relief, protecting Social Security and health care, and restoring reproductive rights.

“I’ve spent my life working for our community and putting politics aside to deliver for Michigan families,” McCann said. “It’s time Washington worked for the people of Southwest Michigan—not just special interests and billionaires.”

McCann currently chairs the Senate Energy and Environment Committee and sits on the Appropriations, Regulatory Affairs, and Transportation and Infrastructure committees. He previously served five terms on the Kalamazoo City Commission and is a graduate of Western Michigan University.

McCann joins a growing Democratic field, which includes Richard Aaron, Diop Harris, and Jessica Swartz. Swartz previously ran against Huizenga in 2024, receiving 43.4% of the vote.
