DNR Says Whitefish Population Dropping Due To Invasive Species

By Mary Ellen Murphy Jul 11, 2025 | 6:18 AM

(Lansing, MI) – The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Stephan Lenart says the state’s whitefish population is dropping and says that is due to invasive species. He made his remarks to the Natural Resources Commission’s Wildlife Committee, and says he is not comfortable or happy to see the decline. Whitefish are found in all five Great Lakes along with some inland lakes and are categorized into the salmon family.

Quagga mussels found in the bottom of the lakebeds are blamed for the decline.
