(Detroit, MI) – A judge is rejecting a challenge to Michigan’s longtime ban on publicly funded abortions for low-income residents. In 2022, Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment ensuring a right to abortion. But even with the amendment, the ban for most taxpayer-funded abortions stays in place for now. A lawsuit on behalf of YWCA Kalamazoo asked the court to declare the abortion-coverage ban unconstitutional and allow Michigan to cover abortion through Medicaid.
But the judge tossed the suit saying the YWCA has no standing, because it’s a nonprofit and not an individual.
