(Muskegon, MI) – After nearly four-decades of work, Muskegon Lake will soon no longer be designated as an Area of Concern. The lake was given the designation in 1987 after it was heavily harmed due to the public using the lake as a dumping ground. Volunteers have worked tirelessly to restore 84 acres of wetlands and have removed more than 120 acres of contaminated sediment.
The public can make comments on delisting the lake as an Area of Concern through July 9th, at which time a final document seeking the removal will be sent to the federal government, with the goal of the delisting taking place in the fall
