West Olive, MI — Ottawa County Veterans Services officially broke ground Tuesday, July 1, on its first-ever dedicated facility, marking a historic milestone in the County’s ongoing effort to improve how local veterans access critical services.

The ceremony was held at the Fillmore Administration Complex in West Olive and was attended by approximately 50 community members, veterans, and local leaders.

Keynote remarks were delivered by U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten (MI-03), Ottawa County Commissioner and Veterans Services Committee Member Kendra Wenzel, and Ottawa County Board of Commissioners Vice-Chair Josh Brugger, all of whom spoke to the significance of expanding veteran resources and outreach.

“I cannot overstate how proud I am that West Michigan remains relentlessly committed to honoring and serving our veterans,” said Rep. Scholten. “It means so much to me to stand here and recommit ourselves to supporting those who gave so much for our freedoms, and that’s exactly what this facility will do.”

Slated for completion this fall, the new facility is a purpose-built, modern space that will enhance the experience and privacy of veterans seeking assistance. Designed to provide a calm, welcoming, and efficient environment, the office will feature:

  • Private screening rooms for VA claims and benefit consultations
  • Individual staff offices to allow for more personalized service
  • A comfortable veteran lounge to foster community and connection
  • Self-help computer stations for accessing benefits and resources
  • A fully equipped conference room for support groups, community events, and outreach programming

Director Jason Schenkel reflected on the long-term vision behind the project and how the new facility will help his team better serve those who have worn the uniform.

“This space is more than just walls and offices,” said Schenkel. “It represents a promise: to our County, our department, our Veterans Committee, and most importantly, to the Veterans and their families of Ottawa County.”

As construction crews prepare to move forward, county leaders reiterated the importance of investing in infrastructure that directly improves residents’ quality of life. For veterans in Ottawa County, this facility represents a meaningful step forward in removing barriers to access.

“Today, we are ensuring that our veterans can recieve the services that they deserve without delay,” said Brugger. “Through the tireless efforts of the Veterans Department, the work of the Veterans Committee and volunteers throughout the community, this place will become a symbol of our commitment to help those who sacrificed for our freedoms.”

The groundbreaking marks a new chapter in the County’s commitment to supporting veterans through accessible, high-quality services and modernized infrastructure.

“I reflect back to November 2024 when the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners made the pivotal decision to approve funding for the renovation,” said Wenzel. “Standing here today, with the continued support of the Board of Commissioners, our county administration, and the citizens of Ottawa County, we see that vision becoming a reality.”
