(Detroit, MI) – Professional women’s basketball will return to Detroit in 2029. The WNBA announced the city will receive an expansion team along with Cleveland and Philadelphia. The Detroit team does not currently have a name but a trademark for the former Detroit Shock was filed in February by the league.
Pistons owner and controlling owner of the franchise Tom Gores says this is a huge win for the city and marks the long-hoped-for return of the WNBA to a city with deep basketball roots.
