Celebrating Our Nation’s Independence in Ottawa County

By Mary Ellen Murphy Jun 30, 2025 | 9:15 AM

Ottawa County, MI (WGHN) – The following is a press release from Ottawa County Veteran Services:

As we approach the Fourth of July, Ottawa County Veterans Services would like to wish you and your loved ones a safe and meaningful Independence Day.

On July 4, 1776, our nation declared its independence—marking the birth of the United States of America and the beginning of a journey defined by freedom, resilience, and unity. This historic moment laid the foundation for the liberties we cherish today.

Our veterans and active-duty service members have carried the torch of that freedom ever since, defending it at home and abroad with unwavering courage and dedication.

As we celebrate this national holiday, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who have served in uniform and those currently protecting our freedoms.

Here are a few upcoming events in Ottawa County to help you enjoy the holiday with friends and family:

Firework and Weather Safety Tips:

While fireworks are a traditional part of Independence Day celebrations, it’s important to be mindful of how they can affect those around us—especially our veterans.

Sudden loud noises and flashes can trigger PTSD symptoms or cause distress in individuals with combat-related trauma. If you’re planning to set off fireworks, please:

Give your neighbors a heads-up beforehand

Consider attending public displays instead of personal fireworks

Keep pets indoors and secure

Additionally, with warmer temperatures expected, remember to:

Stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun

Take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas

Check on elderly neighbors and loved ones who may be vulnerable to heat-related illness

Holiday Office Closure Notice
Our office will be closed on Friday, July 4th to allow our team to rest, relax, and recuperate. We will reopen with normal business hours on Monday, July 7th, and look forward to serving you then.

From all of us at Ottawa County Veterans Services, thank you for supporting our veteran community and for being part of a county that values freedom, service, and unity.
